the children left behind
which, together with the Kenyan foundation ‘YSDAK’, has the mission to provide vulnerable children in and around Kisumu with care and education and to give them opportunities to build a promising future.
Shika Tamaa
Shika Tamaa is our sponsor child plan for vulnerable children in and around Kisumu city. Approximately 100 children are financially supported through this sponsorship plan.
Thanks to this support, part of school fees can be paid and sometimes also the school uniform and school materials.
Ysdak
’the children left behind’ works together with YSDAK (Youth Sports and Development Alliance Kenya). YSDAK is a Self Help Youth Group where in the beginning mainly sports activities were organized. It was discovered that in addition to sports, education was especially needed. YSDAK has adapted to this.
In 2007, YSDAK was officially registered as an NGO (Non Governmental Organisation).
Jamilo school
The school has been given the name JAMILO, The language widely spoken in Kenya is Swahili. The school that we started is called JAMILO. This name might sound Swahilisch, but in reality it is a combination of the first letters of the names of the people who established this school. JAMILO is deduced from JAn, Marjolijn, Ineke, Lilian and Omollo. Lilian and Omollo are our Kenyan team members.
About 30% of the pupils are vulnerable children who receive free education with the help of the school fees paid by the other children and the sponsorship programme.

Jamilo School

About us
It was autumn 2006 when we, (Jan and Ineke Dalm) visited our daughter (Marjolijn), who was doing a project in Kenya for her education. During our visit we were touched by the suffering of orphans due to AIDS. We saw a lot of children who fall between the cracks, children who don’t get to go to school and don’t learn how to read or write, with a lack of care, badly fed, barely dressed and without any medical care. These children barely have the opportunity to develop themselves. Furthermore, we found dilapidated schools, that barely had any facilities and had over-crowded classes. These schools were often so poor, that even for the children who are able to go to school, it is impossible to learn anything…..
Intervention was necessary!
